Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has finally found a climate policy too radical even for her.
During a town hall event in Queens Thursday night, AOC laid out a six-fold policy proposal she's calling the "Just Society"; during the event, the freshman lawmaker also fielded a number of questions about her Green New Deal.
One AOC constituent was so fearful of the consequences of human-emitted carbon dioxide, she said the Green New Deal doesn't go nearly far enough and that people need to ... start eating babies.
"We only have a few months left," the woman told AOC, evidently terrified at the increasingly short time-span climate activists say the world has left before Earth becomes inhospitable to life itself.
"I love that you support the Green Deal but it’s not getting, you know, getting rid of fossil fuel, it’s not going to solve the problem fast enough," the woman went on. "A Swedish professor saying we can eat dead people, but that’s not fast enough. So I think your next campaign slogan has to be this: We got to start eating babies. We don’t have enough time, there’s too much CO2."
"All of you, you know, you’re pollutant," she said. "Too much CO2! We have to start now. Please, you are so great, I’m so happy that you really support a New Green Deal, but it’s not enough. You know, even if we would bomb Russia, we still have too many people, too much pollution. So we have to get rid of the babies, that’s a big problem, just stopping having babies is not enough. We need to eat the babies! This is very serious, please give a response!”
AOC, despite frequently warning time is running out to stop climate change, reassured the woman that “we are never beyond hope.”
“So, I think — so, one of the things that’s very important to us is that we need to treat the climate crisis with the urgency that it does present,” AOC said. “Luckily, we have more than a few months. We do need to hit — “
“We don’t!” the woman loudly interjected.
AOC continued: “ — net zero in several years, but I think we all need to understand that there are a lot of solutions that we have and that we can pursue and that if we act in a positive way there is space for help. We are never beyond hope.”
After the event wrapped, AOC took to Twitter to distance herself from the fearful climate activist.
“Hey everyone! We had a fabulous town hall tonight & I’ll be highlighting some moments from it,” AOC tweeted. “At one point I was concerned there was a woman in crisis & want to ensure we treat the situation compassionately. Let’s not mock or make a spectacle. &let’s work on Medicare for All!”
AOC suggested the woman may be mentally unwell:
The activist is reportedly a member of the fringe political group, LaRouche PAC. The group wrote on its Twitter page, “It was us” in response to a post of video from the event. Other members of the group have been photographed wearing the same “Save the Planet, Eat the Children” shirt the town hall attendee wore.
Elsewhere in the event, AOC said that despite being made fun of for the Green New Deal aspiring to phase out air travel, global warming itself will “ground” airplanes.
"When it comes to the green New Deal, people come from this zero-sum mentality,” she said. “We will take away your hamburgers and airplanes. What this is asking us is, what are we going to make? Not what are we going to take away. What will we establish? For everyone who says it will ground planes, I guarantee you, climate change, which threatens storms and turbulence, will ground airplanes far sooner and worse than any kind of climate legislation ever would. If we made scientific investments in zero carbon airplanes. At some point we will hopefully be able to create that technology."
