‘Hamilton,’ with History of Left-Wing Activism, Singles out Pence for Lecture

‘We are the diverse Americans anxious you will not protect us’
By Grabien Staff

The cast and audience at Broadway's "Hamilton" booed and heckled Vice President-Elect Mike Pence Friday night after he stopped by the popular show for an evening of entertainment.

Upon walking in -- Secret Service detail in tow -- onlookers in the audience began heckling and booing the current governor of Indiana.

Toward the show's conclusion, the cast gathered on stage to single out Pence and speak to him about why their "diverse" cast was "alarmed and anxious."

"We, sir, are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights," Hamilton's Brandon Victor Dixon said. "But truly we hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us, all of us."

This is not the first time politics have erupted during a "Hamilton" performance.

In May, the show's creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, attacked Donald Trump's "anti-immigration rhetoric" during a commencement address at UPenn.

"In a year when politicians traffic in anti-immigrant rhetoric," he said, "there is also a Broadway musical reminding us that a broke, orphan immigrant from the West Indies built our financial system, a story that reminds us that since the beginning of the great unfinished symphony that is our American experiment, time and time again, immigrants get the job done!”

Miranda performed “Alexander Hamilton,” at the White House in 2009, and soon became a regular. President Obama has invited him on several occasions to perform, including a freestyle rap with the president himself. Obama later took credit for the show's success. "The truth is, they do owe me," he joked. “From what I hear,” Questlove, who produced the cast album, told Billboard, “the president won't cease to let you know that: ‘The White House is where it began.’”

In September Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was greeted with boos during his attendance at the show, Page Six reported.

After the terrorist attack at an Orlando nightclub in June, the Hamilton cast announced it would no longer use fake muskets in its performances.

And in March, the show courted controversy after issuing a call for "non-white" actors.

Update:

More incidents of left-wing activism among Hamilton's cast and crew have surfaced since this post was published. Including:

-- Last month, Miranda and a co-star headlined a fund-raiser for Hillary Clinton titled "Broadway for Hillary."

-- The actor who lectured Pence, Brandon Victor Dixon, has previously said he wants to burn "to the ground" the "banks, corporate military, and fossil fuel earth ravagers" who collude with politicians. America, he said, "has never been great."
