Joy Behar Defends Maher: Racist Jokes Acceptable if Comedian Hates Trump

‘Bill Maher is one of the good guys in this fight against Trump’
By Grabien Staff

Racist jokes are actually socially acceptable if the comedian dislikes President Trump.

That's the defense ABC's Joy Behar is mounting of Bill Maher, the HBO host who is fending off calls for his sacking after dropping the n-word during his show Friday night.

“Bill Maher is one of the good guys in this fight against Trump right now," Behar said Monday. "I feel like, you know, you know, not to deflect from what he said because he already apologized, but Donald Trump and his people that ran his real estate agency they actually practiced racism ... They discriminated against black people in housing.”

“To me, that is a much more egregious sin than saying any kind of word, you know, to me," she added.

Maher sparked outrage during an interview Friday with Republican Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska. The junior senator invited Maher to his home to see Nebraska, joking, "We'd love to have you work the fields."

“Work in the fields?" Maher replied. "Senator, I’m a house nigger."

Behar claimed there is an organized "assault" underway against comedians, and Bill Maher and Kathy Griffin are victims of the coordinated attack.

“Let’s not lose perspective about comedians and words and things that comedians are saying because there seems to be this assaults on comedians," she said during an appearance on The View. "In the Kathy Griffin case, which I think you’re going to bring up, there is a lot of overkill going on right now. OK, she made a mistake, and she said something stupid — she did something stupid. She said she’s sorry, and they are piling on her like she is Charles Manson. Get over it.”

The day after Griffin's infamous ISIS-styled photoshoot -- in which she pretending to decapitate the president -- Behar leapt to Griffin's defense, pinning blame for the spectacle on Trump himself.

"I think that the mean-spiritedness comes out of the White House and then the comedians just respond to it," Behar explained. "And people are angry and people feel powerless in this country. Right now, he is about to go against the Paris accords which will increase climate change negatively, and he is about to do something stupid like that again, putting himself with Nicaragua and Syria, the only two other countries in the United Nations who are not going to sign the Paris accord. Even North Korea is on board for that, and this guy is not going to be on it."

"So we are furious," she said, "and the way that we comedians deal with our anger is to be funny and go out there."
