Julian Castro: ‘I Was Glad to See’ Nike Bowing to Kaepernick on Ditching Patriotic Sneakers

‘There are a lot of things in our history that are still very painful’
By Grabien Staff

EXCERPT:

HOST: "Before I let you go I want to talk about getting ready for 4th of July celebrations. You might have seen in the news that Nike sort of backtracked on a decision that they've made. They've released some sneakers that had the flag on the very back with the 13th stars, right?"
CASTRO: "That's right. The Betsy Ross flag."
HOST: "The Betsy Ross flag. And then they became concerned, they got some complaints from Colin Kaepernick who said, hey that's being associated with some unsavory characters, perhaps you know the white supremacist and so on and so forth and they changed -- they reversed course. I want to get your take on that, because we're living in a time where there's a different type of sensitivity and sensibility about race."
CASTRO: "Yeah. Well, you know, I was glad to see that and. And my hope is that that they didn't just do it to do it that they understand the significance there. And look there are a lot of things in our history that are still very painful.”
