Hillary Clinton’s longtime confidante and fund-raiser, Terry McAuliffe, says the frequent presidential candidate is officially giving up.
After sparking curiosity Friday when saying she would still like to be president, McAuliffe responded and tamped down the speculation, saying Clinton “is never going to be on the ballot again.”
“It’s hard for Hillary. She got three million more votes than Donald Trump did in the last presidential election. But I feel confident in saying I think Hillary is never going to be on the ballot again, I think she is done running for elected office. She’s going to be out helping candidates. But I feel very confident in saying she’s not going to run for president.”
Here’s an excerpt from the exchange:
JACKSON: “I’m going to play — I think we have time to play it real quick and then I want to get your reaction.”
MCAULIFFE: “Yeah.”
[clip starts]
SWISHER: “We’re going to talk about 2020 in a minute. Do you want to run again?”
CLINTON: “No. No.”
SWISHER: “That was a pause.”
CLINTON: Well, I’d like to be president. ... I’m going to — I’m not even going to even think about it til we get through this November 6 election.”
[clip ends]
JACKSON: “OK. So does — clearly, her answer is no, governor. Her spokesman said her answers about waiting after the midterms was in relation to her supporting role in 2020. But what do you make of that response from — from Hillary Clinton there?”
McAULIFFE: “Listen, I think it’s hard for Hillary. She got three million more votes than Donald Trump did in the last presidential election. But I feel confident in saying I think Hillary is never going to be on the ballot again, I think she is done running for elected office. She’s going to be out helping candidates. But I feel very confident in saying she’s not going to run for president.”
