Ocasio-Cortez: ‘The Future of Humanity’ Hangs on Climate Change Being a Big Issue in 2020

New York’s freshman congressman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is issuing another dire warning about humanity’s prospects on planet Earth.

In a recent appearance with Ta-Nehisi Coates, Ocasio-Cortez warned “the world is going to end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change.”

In an interview Wednesday with The Intercept, Ocasio-Cortez said “the future of humanity” depends on global warming being a major issue in the 2020 presidential election.

“I do not think that for the future of humanity and for our country to continue to prosper that we cannot have another presidential cycle where climate change is asked about at all at almost every debate,” she said. “And that includes the role of fossil fuel — fossil fuel industries, and that includes the role of a broad spectrum of issues. So I think that climate change needs not be a nice thing for us to talk about, but it needs to be a critical thing for us to talk about.”

The eco-focused lawmaker went on: “Of course it would be amazing to see the Green New Deal talked about — and it’s starting to, that’s really exciting. I think it is a hard litmus test on a specific issue and moral litmus test on framing. So I do not think that the 2020 candidate can afford to not have an inter-sectional message that weaves the story of race and class.”
