Peter Baker on Venezuela: The Argument Is That This Is Not a ‘Military Operation,’ It’s a Law Enforcement Operation

‘That’s an interesting theory’
By Grabien Staff

RUSH EXCERPT:
BAKER: "Well, look, you know, the argument here is that there was a duly constituted indictment in federal court against maduro and that, therefore, the United States had the authority and the responsibility to execute that indictment by arresting him, that this is not a military operation in this argument. It’s a law enforcement operation that happened to be accompanied by military force in order to to to protect those in the FBI and so forth who were executing the arrest warrant. Now, that’s an interesting theory. And it’s, you know, it reminds us, of course, of what happened with Manuel noriega during the first the bush term in the 1989 era. But the question to me goes beyond just this arrest. The question to me then goes, there’s nothing in this indictment that says the president, United States then gets to take over the other guy’s country and take over his oil and sell his oil and keep the money and decide what to do with the money. That goes way beyond the idea of law enforcement, way beyond the idea of executing an arrest warrant. And I think that we haven’t really heard a good explanation of their legal theory on that."
