Rep. Tlaib Urges Biden to Use Defense Production Act to Force Companies to Enact Green New Deal

‘They need to be bold and courageous’

EXCERPT:

TLAIB: “So, President Biden can reinstate right now the crude oil export ban. This was overturned in 2015, a major driver of the oil shale boom, you know, by declaring a national emergency under the National Emergencies Act. He can also direct the Department of Energy to reject applications for gas exports to the extent allowed under the Natural Gas Act. He could also, you know, mobilize domestic industry to manufacture and install renewable energy technology with good-paying union jobs. One of the things that folks don't realize, on a wartime footing, President Biden can marshal federal funds and coordinate the action of private companies to jumpstart a thriving domestic renewable energy industry. These, you know, this kind of includes manufacturing and selling green energy systems, energy efficiency technology, electric transportation infrastructure, all of it under the Defense Production Act. Unions must be a key stakeholder. It must be at the table in the process to ensure that, again, this new energy economy that we want to create with this, that it does lead to good-paying union jobs. It is also, and this is one of the last kind of options he has on the table, is to truly focus, and this is something that’s important to my community, build a resilient, distributed renewable energy systems in frontline communities most affected by dirty and unjust energy complex.”
