Schumer: Senate Should Adjourn Until After Election

‘So, our Republican majority refused to consider the Supreme Court nominee of a duly-elected Democratic president on the supposed principle that the American people should have a voice in selecting their next Supreme Court justice’

SCHUMER: “Okay, Mr. President — shhhhhhhh. So, our Republican majority refused to consider the Supreme Court nominee of a duly-elected Democratic president on the supposed principle that the American people should have a voice in selecting their next Supreme Court justice. Now they’re moving forward with a Supreme Court nomination while a presidential election is already underway. This is the most rushed, most partisan, least legitimate Supreme Court nomination process in our nation’s history, in our nation’s entire history, and it should not proceed. Therefore, I will move to adjourn the Senate until after the November 3 election, with the ability to come back into session if there’s a bipartisan agreement on a COVID relief package. So therefore, I move to adjourn and then convene for a pro forma session only with no business being conducted at 12:00 noon on the following dates, and that the following — each pro forma session in the Senate adjourn until the next pro forma session, Tuesday, October 20th, Friday, October 23rd, Tuesday, October 27, Friday, October 30th, Tuesday, November 3rd, Friday, November 6th. And when the Senate adjourns Friday, November 6th, it convene at 4:30 Monday, November 9th, and that following the prayer and pledge the morning hour will be deemed expired, the journal proceedings be approved to date, the time for the two leaders be reserved for their use later in the day and morning business be closed.”

UNKNOWN: “That motion will require consent and is not in order.”

SCHUMER: “I appeal the ruling of the chair and I move to table the appeal.”

UNKNOWN: “The question is on the motion to table the appeal.”

SCHUMER: “I ask for the yays and nays.”

UNKNOWN: “Is there sufficient second? There appears to be. There is. The clerk will call the roll.”
