Sen. Van Hollen: It’s Time for the Filibuster to Go, the Senate Is Already ‘Antidemocratic’ Because Wyoming Has 2 Senators

‘We have to find a way forward’

EXCERPT:

VAN HOLLEN: “And my view is that that is where we should change the rules. The Senate is already an anti-democratic institution, small 'd', right? I mean, two senators from Wyoming have the same number of votes as the two senators from California. And the filibuster rule in my view just compounds that anti-democratic, anti-majoritarian bent in Congress. So, lot of ideas out there, some would carve out exceptions to the filibuster rules for pieces of legislation that are dealing with democracy, but my view is we have to find a way forward. That just in terms of our own national interest, the gridlock we see on Capitol Hill is preventing the country from doing some very big and important things. The Founders didn't put the filibuster in the Constitution, it was an invention of the Senate. And my view is that it's time for it to go, but that will be a discussion we have in the caucus going forward."
