Rattner: If Democrats Ignore Suburban Voters, that ‘Does Worry Me Quite a Lot for 2020’

‘There’s a lot of debate within the Democratic Party about how to win the next election’

EXCERPT:

SCARBOROUGH: "So Steve, you’re concerned actually about candidates, progressive candidates like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders getting the nomination. And you’re suggesting if they do it may be a little tougher ride for the Democratic Party in these suburban areas."
RATTNER: "I think it’s going to be tougher, not necessary in suburbs — but there are a huge number of centrists, moderates, people who are independents, a lot of the I know — they would never want to go into a voting booth and vote for Donald Trump. Didn’t vote for him last time. Voted at least happily for Hillary Clinton. And as you go through the list of potential Democratic nominees, and you tick off some of the names that you can imagine, they’re saying, I can’t vote for that person. And then, you also have within the party a faction that says we shouldn’t worry about this sort of centrists, suburbanites, whatever you want to call them, we should go out there and energize the base, we should get the people of color, we should get the other disadvantage groups out there and that will, that energy and that turnout will win the election. I don’t believe that’s true. I don’t think there’s any evidence to suggest that’s true. But that’s the debate that’s going on within the party right now. And it does worry me quite a lot about 2020."
