Supercut: Media Panic as Sanders Cruising Toward 2020 Nomination

‘Anyone but Bernie’

The media are sounding the alarm.

As Bernie Sanders solidifies his lead over his 2020 Democratic presidential competitors, members of the media are starting to worry that a race that once appeared impossibly easy for Democrats to win is suddenly slipping from their grasp.

These TV talking heads are now forecasting not just a possible Trump re-election, but a 49-state, Walter Mondale-style blowout.

Assessing last night’s Democratic debate, MSNBC’s Donny Deutsch confessed to entering a state of sheer panic.

“Is anybody panicked?” Deutsch said Thursday. “It does look like Sanders is rolling and that 2/3 of the country thinks we’re going in the right direction, and you have a guy who wants to burn it down. To me, he — I just don’t see him having any shot in a general election, and I’m panicked. I am absolutely panicked.”

Deutsch’s peacock colleague, Chris Matthews, urged Democrats to wake up before walking into a landslide.

“Nobody just says the obvious, ‘Bernie, you’re full of it,’” Matthews complained of the Democratic Party on Tuesday. “They’re just pandering to the Bernie people. And you know what pandering gets you? Nothing. It certainly doesn’t get you respect. They’ve got to get out there and say, ‘I disagree with socialism. I believe in the markets. I think he’s wrong. I think he’ll never get it done and this country will never go that direction, and by the way, we’ll lose 49 states.’”

“I was there in 1972 at the Democratic convention when the people on the left were dancing in glee,” Matthews continued. “I saw them literally — they were dancing in a circle. They were so happy that they defeated the moderates like Tip O’Neill and Dick Daley and they went on to lose 49 states in their glee. So that could happen again.”

On Fox News, Democratic strategist Doug Shoen warned that a Sanders nomination would mean a “blowout” for Trump in 2020.

“The winner tonight was Donald Trump,” Shoen said. “The Democrats forgot that the opponent is the president, not one another. The personal attacks may have sounded good to some viewers or some ideologues, but the loser — as Leslie put it — are the Democrats. If we nominate a socialist like Bernie Sanders, who doesn’t accept capitalism, or people who believe in massive tax increases, we are going to lose. It will be like George McGovern, it will be a blow out.”

The Hill’s A.B. Stoddaid said last night’s debate was a clear victory for Trump.

“Well, I thought it was a great night for Bernie Sanders, I thought it was a great night for Donald Trump,” she said during an MSNBC panel. “I thought it was a terrible night for the Democrats. And I don’t think Bloomberg’s bad night is going to matter given the amount of money he’s spending on the ground. Given the fact that a lot of voters who are going to matter later are not really watching debates.”

Joe Scarborough is likewise concerned about Democrats’ 2020 chances with Sanders atop the ticket.

“I don’t see how Democrats do anything but bleed out their newfound support in the suburbs when they put a socialist at the top of the ticket,” Scaborough said Wednesday. “I could be wrong, I don’t think I am.”
