Bill Weir: Washington, New York Are Set to Follow California Ban on New Gas Car Sales

‘You can see the pressure of that consumer base who really wants this’

EXCERPT:

But it is hugely ambitious. And then the scientists and activists would say it’s not nearly ambitious enough. Some groups are calling for a zero ban just by 2030, five years sooner than that. They’re hoping, those folks in California, that this will work, but this will be a market signal because so many states follow. Washington State already announced they will copy California. New York will probably follow, and a bunch here in the northeast, and that’s a third of American vehicles. So you can see the pressure of that consumer base who really wants this. 'Consumer Reports' study, Jim, recently said — I think it was about 36% of Americans would definitely or seriously consider buying an electric vehicle on their next one, there's a smaller percentage that say they definitely wouldn’t. But at a certain point there were enough Model As and Model Ts on the road that it was obvious we weren’t going back to horses. This may be enough to push it over the top where it's obvious that the tailpipe is on its way towards extinction, at least as a pillar of the economy. This doesn’t outlaw gas-powered cars and it also covers plug-in hybrids, so gas stations will be in California’s future for coming generations, there will be a lot of used cars, some may hold on to those old gas-burning cars longer than they would have. So, it remains to be seen, but, yeah, California is leading the vanguard on this one."
