Carson: Trump Told Me He Doesn’t Believe ‘Outlandish’ Things He Says

‘Some of the more outlandish things’ Trump says, he doesn’t believe

Dr. Ben Carson, who endorsed Donald Trump for president Friday, said Trump told him he doesn't actually believe everything he's saying in his speeches. Carson's comments to The Hill come after an earlier report that Trump told the New York Times' editorial board he doesn't believe everything he's saying.

The Hill reports:

“I needed to know that he could listen to other people, that he could change his opinions, and that some of the more outlandish things that he’s said, that he didn’t really believe those things,” Carson said.

When asked which statements Trump might back away from, Carson demurred.

“I’ll let him talk about that because I don’t think it’s fair for me to relay a private conversation,” he said.

Earlier, The New York Times reported Trump told them he brings up building a wall along the southern border as a rhetorical device to get the crowd excited.

“You know,” he told the Times writers, “if it gets a little boring, if I see people starting to sort of, maybe thinking about leaving, I can sort of tell the audience, I just say, ‘We will build the wall!’ and they go nuts.”
