And then he was astonished to discover that actually the senior ranks of the American military are full of people who realize allies are an asset, not a liability, they've lived abroad, they often speak foreign languages, they are highly sophisticated about America’s interest in the world, and he did not find allies among the four-stars and the three-stars. So one of the things, if he has to do it all over again, you might imagine that Donald Trump would want to do is start hunting among the colonels and the one stars for MAGA types he can promote to three-star and four-star authority. That’s where a secretary of defense, a like-minded one, can be very helpful. Hegseth doesn’t have to be an administrative genius. He doesn't have to be even ordinarily smart to be able to figure out which of the colonels and one-stars like Trump, will to his bidding, and should be fast-tracked to higher rank where they can hold important commands, where they can do damage to the security of the United States and the democratic institutions of the United States. I would be worried about his role in promotions."
