Dem Rep. Houlahan on Voting Rights: ‘If We Don’t Do Something at the Federal Level,’ the Democracy ‘Is Threatened’

‘I really appreciate Senator Manchin putting forward these ideas, clearly they’re good ideas because Stacey Abrams has also endorsed them’

JACKSON: “You bring up Juneteenth. There has been some criticism you know, within the span of what, 72 hours Congress basically introduced enacted and the president signed into law a new federal holiday that was then took place just this weekend. Yet on voting right, more broadly, something that is critically important to many in communities of color there is just no movement that seems to be possible beyond this floor vote that Senator Schumer plans to bring tomorrow. Where do you stand on the proposal for example from Senator Joe Manchin, if let’s say something happens and that gets to the Senate although that seems wildly unlikely at this point.”

HOULAHAN: “So I — I really appreciate Senator Manchin putting forward these ideas, clearly they’re good ideas because Stacey Abrams has also endorsed them . I believe H.R. 1 is a broad sweeping piece legislation to S.1 and. Of course, I wish that that would get to the floor for a vote. But I would very much like to see us getting something done and — and I think it’s very important we recognize that if we don’t do something at the federal level, we — the democracy in my opinion is threatened. And so I’m hopeful that the — the pieces that Senator Manchin has put forward has an opportunity to gain life and to hopefully be considered by the Senate and would very much love it if they would come over our way so we could consider them, too.”
