CARDIN: "We know from previous shootings, we know about gun violence, that you are so much more likely to be a victim of gun violence here in the United States than any of the other industrial nations of the world. We know there's two things that we can do. We don't know whether it would have any impact on this episode, but clearly we need universal background checks and we need to get rid of both the military-style assault weapons and private ownership. That's two pretty basic things that can get done that would certainly help the situation. We do need a national dialogue and we need to take multiple strategies in order to address violence in our community."
